Death Valley, the Alabama Hills, and Mt. Whitney

Death Valley

Fewer than 100 miles separate Death Valley (the lowest, hottest, and driest place in North America) from Mt. Whitney (the highest point in the lower 48 states).  Luckily we drove through the valley's strange beauty on a cool evening.

Alabama Hills

Thousands of monzogranite boulders form this unique landscape on the Eastern slope of the Sierras, with Mt. Whitney looming in the distance.  Scenes from over 150 movies have been filmed here, from Gladiator and Stark Trek Generations back to Gene Autry, John Wayne, and Roy Rogers flicks.

Mt. Whitney

We did Mt. Whitney (14,505 feet) as a 22-mile day hike, starting at 5 am and finishing at 6 pm...
